What is PEBS?
PEBS or Positive Effective Behavioral Support is a Department of Education mandated initiative that focuses on positive discipline. It does this by rewarding students for appropriate behaviors and applying specific consequences for inappropriate behavior. The main focus is on educating students on what is appropriate in all areas of school life (classrooms, hallway, cafeteria, etc). This is a wonderful initiative that will help to create a more positive, safe and consistent learning environment for all students.
Positive Discipline
Attached you will find William King’s Behavior Matrix expectations. The focus in our school will be on showing Respect for Self, Others, Environment and Learning. Staff will be working really hard to reinforce these concepts with the students over the coming weeks. Each teacher will review the Matrix with their class and we will be engaged in school-wide activities to promote positive actions. Students will be receiving “Gotcha” tickets that recognize being “caught” in a positive action. We have already had an assembly with the students to explain the process. They are excited about the program and looking forward to earning their “Gotcha” tickets! Please check out our William King Website throughout the year to find out what is new with PEBS!
Tracking
We, at William King, approach discipline using a whole staff philosophy. We believe that we are all responsible for rewarding and teaching appropriate behaviors in all settings. All staff has been inserviced on the behavioral expectations and will be addressing behavioral concerns as they occur. It is extremely important to the program that we are all consistent with addressing negative behaviors immediately as they happen in an attempt to reduce the frequency of occurrence. Certain behaviors will be tracked by using forms compiled by staff. You will receive a phone call if your child has accumulated four minor referrals by an attending adult. This will help to keep you informed of possible negative behavior at school and give both you and the teacher a chance to help problem solve an issue. If a student receives a fifth referral then he/she will be referred to the office and a consequence will be administered. More serious behavioral concerns exhibited in school will bypass this system and immediately be referred to the office for consultation.
Success centers on recognizing
